The Importance Of Exfoliation

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface layer of the skin (epidermis). It is known to be one of the most therapeutic things you can do for your skin and has a large list of benefits attached. However, this needs to be done properly based on skin condition and type to see the best results. As we age, our skin’s natural ability to generate new cells can take anywhere from 30-50 days. Dead skin cells can build up causing your skin to appear dull, flaking or even rough. They can clog pores which leads to unsightly breakouts. By exfoliation, you are removing dead skin cells and increasing new cell production which results in softer, smoother skin instantly. With professional treatments, collagen synthesis may be improved as well as tone and radiance.

Typically, there are 2 types of exfoliation: mechanical or chemical. Mechanical exfoliants include using a washcloth, loofah, facial scrub, cleansing brush and microdermabrasion. It is imperative to have your skin checked by a professional to determine the best route as there are many physical exfoliants on the market which are too harsh. Chemical exfoliants are a personal favourite as they can break down the bonds that hold dead skin cells together. In most cases, products/peels containing alpha hydroxyacids (AHAs), beta hydroxyacids (BHAs) or enzymes can range in concentrations and penetration levels. Professional peels are recommended every 5 weeks to notice the best results.

It is very important that exfoliation be done properly otherwise it can lead to dry and irritated skin. The benefits are undeniable and immediate, regardless of which exfoliation technique you choose.
